If you take a stroll along East Lakeshore Drive in Houghton in the area once occupied by the Carroll Foundry, you’ll find a line of old houses along with this interesting stone structure. Not so much a structure as a impressively landscaped hillside, these lines of rubble-rock walls make up what was once a vast terraced garden belonging to the Edwards’ estate. The Edwards’ house is today home to the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, but back around 1917 the house was home to Mr. Richard Edwards. Mr. Edwards was the president and manager of several Ontonagon county mining companies, including the Algomah, North Lake, and Indiana. The mining business must have been good, since he was able to live in a rather large and spacious house complete with an impressive terraced garden overlooking the old foundry grounds as well as the neighboring waterway.
