The old wood-framed church that served Grace Methodist Episcopal Church was nothing more then a room with four walls and a roof, hardly a structure representative of the region’s premiere Methodist congregation – known as the “mother church”. Thus plans for a new masonry structure were begun in 1892, with the final structure completed the following year. The impressive building that resulted featured a rather modest $18,000 price tag, thanks largely to donated sandstone from the Jacobsville quarries. Yet there as nothing modest about the structure that resulted, a rugged Richardsonian Romanesque beauty with a soaring corner bell tower and large round-arched stained glass windows.
