Raymond Daniel-Kejuan Silas was a Baraga man convicted of murdering his girlfriend.

Police released the names of two individuals killed in an alleged murder and subsequent police suspect shooting last Thursday night in Baraga County. Chelsey Lynn LaFernier, 23, of Baraga was stabbed to death by her boyfriend, Raymond Daniel-Kejuan Silas, 23, also of Baraga, according to the Michigan State Police at the Calumet and L'Anse posts.

A death notice issued from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel in L'Anse published in the Mining Journal of Marquette said LaFernier died at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

Shortly after the stabbing, police were looking for Raymond Daniel-Kejuan Silas, 23, a man who had been living in Baraga but was originally from the Grand Rapids area, said Det. Sgt. Tom Rajala of the MSP Calumet post. "He had told several people after he left the residence what he had done," Rajala said, referring to the killing of LaFernier. "He called several people."

A L'Anse state police trooper spotted and pursued Silas' white pick-up traveling south on U.S. 41 until it crashed into another vehicle. When the trooper attempted to arrest Silas, he refused numerous commands and said he had a gun he was going to use to shoot the officer. The trooper shot Silas, striking him at least once, after Silas charged at him. Silas was pronounced dead on arrival at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

State Police Lieutenant Mike Loyd said the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police are investigating the murder. He said his agency is not releasing the name of the trooper yet. The MSP continue to investigate the shooting.

"We're currently compiling reports involving the shooting by a member of the state police and once the investigation is completed, we will forward the report to the Baraga County prosecutor for his review," he said.
